  1. My late husband suffered from liver failure that caused hepatic encephalopathy, a build up of ammonia in the brain from the liver not being able to process protein. If it didn't put him in a coma, he would lose his ability to process information and become combative with any kind of stimulation, even a voice. We had to keep him from harming himself, keep him from going outside, keep him out of the kitchen so he wouldn't try to cook and start a fire or cut himself with a knife. I had to hide all his guns, knives and hunting paraphernalia... it wasn't enough to try to TELL him to not do something, we had to physically step in to protect him from himself. We never knew when he would have an episode, so we had someone with him 24/7. It was exhausting. He would never remember anything that happened when he came out of it, and his first concern was, 'did I hurt anyone?' Bless his heart.

  3. I love reading about all you are doing to help residents and family and caretakers of care centers! You are one very special person -- and your staff are incredible as well! Your love and support will always be a part of me, because this PART of the circle of life....takes some time to heal.

I miss you and seeing you in action! Wish I could attend your Parkway Health Care Center sessions!

    Love you all,
    Monica Lovell
